Clean a Car Battery

  • You will need to determine the configuration of the terminals as there are different types. Determining the configuration will help you to pick the correct wrench to loosen the nuts that keep the cables in place.

  • Once all the corrosion is off, it is an absolute necessity to rinse away any baking soda and loose corrosion with cool water.
  • The battery has to be completely dry before replacing the cables and clamps to avoid short circuiting the system.

Paint Protection Film

Now, there are preventative measures, such as ensuring it’s well maintained, cleaning it, and driving carefully. But, what about factors you can’t control. For instance, a small piece of gravel that’s been kicked up by a semi-trailer, and ricochets off your bonnet, or roof, or mirror, or any part. This is where paint protection film steps in. Its purpose is similar to that of bulletproof glass (please do not shoot at a car with paint protection film). It’s job is to absorb the impact by acting as a barrier. Its composition is made up of a polyurethane film, not too far off the stuff used on armoured glass. The use of paint protection film is to ensure that little to no harm comes to your vehicle. I mean, it’s not going to protect you if you another car slams into you at 60km/h. That job is reserved for your seatbelt and airbags. It will, however, stop those unruly scratches, stone chips, and even minor abrasions. It even protects your paint work from pollutants and contaminants, such as bird droppings, tree sap, dirt, dust and other unfavourable things that could damage your paint. Paint protection film can save you a tonne of money in the long run. While more affordable alternatives, namely ceramic coating, are available, they do not provide the protection against scratches and rock chips. Paint protection film does.

Dual Clutch Transmission

The main disadvantage of having a dual clutch transmission in your car is the price. Replacing this type of system requires skill. It is a complicated clutch kit system that needs electronic and mechanical knowledge.

The dual clutch transmission is also known as a semi-automatic transmission. This transmission provides the functionality of two manual transmissions in one. Once the driver changes from one gear to another gear in a regular stick shift car, the first thing that should be done is to press the clutch pedal. This will disconnect the engine from the gearbox and at the same time, it will disconnect current from the transmission.

The driver uses the stick shift to select a new gear as speed increases and torque decreases, which will involve moving a toothed collar from a gear wheel to another gear wheel which has different sizes. Furthermore, there is a device called the synchronizer that helps match the gears so that there is no grinding. Mechanically, it makes sure that the gears are engaged.

The clutch kit includes a disc or grip pressure plate; although some clutch kits have pilot bushings or pilot bearings. All these items have specific functions that are included in the clutch kit.

The flow of power from the engine to the wheel does not exist in a conventional manual transmission. During gearshifts the power will turn on and off then back on again. This will cause a shift shock or what is called a torque interrupt. Sophisticated electronics and hydraulics control the clutches just like in a standard automatic transmission. Clutches operate individually when using a dual clutch transmission, one will control the odd gears and the other will control the even gears.

Brake Shoe Bonding

Was it squealing? That could be as simple as the pads wearing down. No big deal, right? Was the pedal sticking? That’s a little bit of a bigger issue because that is a sign of a faulty master cylinder. It is safe to say that if they lock up with just a slight bit of pressure, you need to get to mechanic as soon as possible.

Since brakes are one of the most important parts on a car, you need to be cautious if you notice anything strange. If you can’t stop or slow down, how are you going to drive? A typical car has two forms of braking; the primary one, which is your pedal, is used when the car is running and on the road. Assuming your car has drums as opposed to discs, you may need to add shoes to your brake repair to-do list. The shoe is typically used because it has the quickest response time when stopping. It sits inside the drum in front of your hydraulic slave cylinder and is an essential factor into getting your car to stop. It is made with heat resistant metals like zinc and has rubber shavings to reduce excess noise. Whereas, if you had disc brakes, the callipers and pads are what’s controlling the stopping motion of your car.

With brakes being the number one most replaced item on a car, it is definitely a good idea to have some understanding about them and their critical role in your everyday commute.

Brake Pad Replacement

The first sign that the callipers need to be replaced is how your vehicle reacts. In some cases, the car will struggle to maintain speed and a potent smell can be noticed if the parts are burnt out. Unfortunately, you will not be able to check the brakes because they will be so hot from the friction caused by braking. This process has to be done immediately to avoid having to replace the rotors as well. Dragging callipers will score and scratch the rotor surface causing it to become worn down and damaged. In this case you will either have to machine the part or replace it completely.

For the mechanic to reach the callipers, they will have to loosen the lug nuts and remove the wheel. If rubber line screws are attached, they will have to remove the rubber brake line at the far end first. Once the component is out, the brake pads will have to be removed. At this point, the mechanic is constructing the calliper to be a component on its own without tampering with the rest of the system. This includes the seals within the component and the piston that contains the hydraulic fluid.

In most cases, the reason why the calliper drags is due to serious corrosion that occurs over time. Grits and rough surfaces will have to be polished down for a smooth surface. Remember that the calliper has to be functioning at all times. Any roughness and corrosion will compromise the fluid from making this clamping motion.

Replace a Power Window Regulator and Motor Assembly

The list of tools recommended to replace a power window regulator are as follows: Drilling tool and bits, painters tape, silicone spray, hex key magnetic, wrench, screwdriver, razor knife, white lithium grease, zip tie, magnet, plastic pry tool, socket wrench and sockets, gloves, and safety glasses.

We will review some general information before we get started on the installation directions. The first thing you will want to do is to ensure your working with a clean and dust free area. To begin, use silicone spray to clean the window run channels before installation. You’ll want to use a plastic pry tool rather than a screwdriver to remove the door panel to prevent damage. To avoid damage surface of residue, use painters tape to affix the window. Last, use a magnetic wrench and screwdriver to loosen or tighten the screws, nuts, and bolts.

There are essentially eight steps to replace a window regulator and motor assembly:

  1. Remove door trim
  2. Disconnect wiring
  3. Release connecting hardware
  4. Disconnect harness plug
  5. Install new window regulator
  6. Reconnect power supply
  7. Attach the window glass
  8. Test the window

Let’s go ahead and get started on the fitting. First, remove the interior door trim panel. Be sure to retain the hardware. Gently disconnect the wiring from the components inside the door. If a protective covering exists, remove it by hand when possible. Next, raise or lower the window glass to expose the hardware that connects the window regulator to the window glass. Then, release the connecting hardware, slide the glass up and affix the window in place. Next, disconnect the harness plug for the motor and release the screws to remove the window regulator assembly. Then, install the new window regulator assembly and secure the screws. Reconnect the power supply, raise or lower the window glass to expose the hardware. Attach the window glass in place with the hardware. And lastly, run the window up and down to verify the correct range of movement and operation.

Fuel Injector Burning

1. Long time idling operation

Due to the diesel engine keeps running slowly for a long time, the temperature in the cylinder is low, the fuel combustion is not sufficient, the combustion chamber and fuel injection nozzle are easy to form carbon deposition. So it leads to the deterioration of working conditions for fuel injection nozzle. Especially in winter, it is even more serious under the condition of cold climate. Because the combustion chamber has carbon deposition, heat dissipation is slow, which may cause spray orifice obstruction of the injection nozzle and the oil drip phenomenon may happen. The fuel stays in the nozzle head for a long time, the local high temperature will make the nozzle and thermal insulation jacket burned.

2. The fuel is not clean

Due to there are small particles of impurities in the fuel, the needle valve and needle valve body of the fuel injector will wear. It is possible that the needle valve will be stuck in the needle valve body.Because of needle valve lag, the fuel can’t be periodically, quantitatively and quickly sprayed into the combustion chamber, the oil drip phenomenon will appear, which may cause the fuel atomization is not good and the combustion speed is reduced. Due to the burning time of the nozzle is extended, which will make the nozzle and the thermal insulation jacket burned. When such fault occurs, there will be black smoke and chattering phenomenon.

3. Fuel injection time is too late

The fuel injection advance angle is too small which may lead to a late fuel injection time. If it can’t be adjusted for a long time, the local high temperature will make the nozzle and thermal insulation jacket burned.

4. Improper assembly

If the nozzle insulation sheath is installed without cleaning, there will be a gap between the fuel injection nozzle and the insulation sheath. The gas enters into the gap, the heat insulation and cooling effect is reduced, which will cause the fuel injection nozzle and the insulation sheath burned. If the thermal insulation sheath is too tight, the nozzle will generate additional stress. Under the combined action of heat alternating load and high pressure of fuel injection, the nozzle will be broken and the needle valve will be stuck. In addition, if the insulation sheath can’t get installed during maintenance, the nozzle extends into the combustion chamber more than 4mm above the cylinder head bottom, the heat absorbed by the injection nozzle will increase, which make the nozzle melted.

5. Improper use of the genset

If it lacks of coolant liquid while the unit is at work, the combustion chamber can’t be in good state of cooling, which will lead to the high temperature. This is also an important reason to cause the burning of fuel injection nozzle.

Lead Acid Batteries

Lead acid car batteries are energy storing devices made up of lead and lead dioxide plates. These plates are submerged into an electrolyte solution. The percentage of water is 65% and sulphuric acid contributes 35% to this solution. When the battery is used to start the car, it gets discharged. The sulphuric acid in the electrolyte solution gets depleted leaving a higher proportion of water. The sulfate is returned to the acid during the charging process. The battery provides high current required by the starter motor to crank the engine of the car. Once the engine is started, the battery is again recharged by the engine driven charging system. In this process, the alternator takes necessary energy from the rotation of engine through a belt to charge up the battery. When the engine is running, the alternator generates electricity for the electrical equipment of the car.

What makes a battery weak?

When the car is exposed to direct sunlight in summers for longer periods of time, it accelerates the process of corrosion and evaporates the electrolyte. This reduces the life of a battery making it weaker. So, avoid getting your car heated by sunlight by parking in a suitable shade.

A battery must be fitted properly to avoid any sort of vibrations. These vibrations over the time shake the plates around which in turn make the internal connections lose. As a result, the battery would not get properly charged.

Once you start the car, make sure to drive it for enough time for the battery to get recharged again. The alternator takes time to recharge the battery after it has released its energy while starting the engine. Otherwise, the battery will stay undercharged which is not sufficient to provide high current to the starting motor.

Keeping the headlights or music system on while the engine is shut down drains the battery over the time. Avoid plugging in a charger for a longer period of times to prevent the battery from discharging.

Corrosion on battery terminals is as harmful to the battery as anything else. Always clean the battery terminals carefully once or twice in a month. Make sure to wear gloves and eye protection. The white powder on terminals is toxic and should not be allowed to come in contact with the skin.

Signs that indicate battery replacement:

There are a couple of signs that may indicate your battery is getting weak and needs a replacement.

  • The bright headlights of the car become slightly dim when the engine is turned off.
  • The starter motor turns slowly when you start the car due to the low current provided by the battery.

There are a few visual signs that indicate the battery needs a replacement.

  • An internal short circuit or overcharging leads to a swollen battery. If you see signs of bulging anywhere around the battery, replace it.
  • Examine the battery case carefully for any damage to the battery case.

How to start an engine with a weak battery?

It is not recommended to use a weak battery. However, in an emergency case, jumper cables can be used when you are stuck during your trip along the roadside. Always keep a set of jumper cables in your car if you think the battery is not in a supreme condition. Jumper cables let you jump start your vehicle with the help of another car. Although it is a very simple technique but safety measures must be taken to avoid any danger. Following steps will guide you to jump-start the vehicle:

  • Make sure both batteries have the same voltage rating i.e. 12 V
  • Turn off the ignition switch after parking it close enough to the other car in neutral position.
  • Never jump a frozen battery. It can easily explode.
  • Wear rubber gloves and safety glasses.
  • Carefully identify and connect the positive terminals of both batteries to each other.
  • Make sure the other end does not touch car’s body to avoid any dangerous spark.
  • Clamp the negative cable to the negative terminal of the good battery.
  • Connect the other end of the negative cable to a metal part of the car with a weak battery.
  • Finally the start the car with the good battery.
  • Give it 5-7 minutes to charge the weak battery.
  • Now start the ignition of the car with a weak battery.
  • Carefully remove the cables in reverse order. Remove the negative cables first followed by removing the positive cable from the car with the good battery. In the end, remove the positive cable from the car with a weak battery.

How to check battery’s health?

For proper maintenance of battery, schedule once a month to check the status of the battery. Nowadays there are tools that can help measure the present condition of the battery. Following are the most commonly used tools for this purpose:

Battery load tester:

Battery load tester is used to check the voltage rating of the running battery. It has a display meter with voltage readings up to 16V along with the battery health indicator. It has positive and negative probes. Inside, there is a high current capacity coil which provides the necessary load with a toggle switch. Battery voltage can be tested easily by following these steps:

  • Turn off the car engine.
  • Connect the positive probe of load tester with the positive terminal of the battery.
  • Similarly, connect the negative probe with the negative terminal.
  • Make sure both probes are properly connected with the battery terminals.
  • The meter will show a voltage reading in accordance with the health of the battery.
  • Now, turn on the load toggle switch for 05-07 seconds to measure the battery voltage on load.
  • A healthy battery ideally shows 12.5 volts.
  • If the meter needle deflects anywhere near the “weak” indication, immediately replace the battery.
  • Safely remove the probes in reverse order.

Hydrometer:

The hydrometer is another tool to measure the battery health. It measures the specific gravity of electrolyte but can only be used on batteries with removable caps. Hydrometers usually have a built-in thermometer. Follow these easy steps to measure the remaining battery life:

  • Start with removing caps from the top of the battery.
  • Dip the tip of the hydrometer in the first cell of the battery.
  • Squeeze and release it from behind to let the electrolyte enter into the cylinder of the hydrometer.
  • Read the specific gravity of electrolyte as indicated.
  • Note the reading for all cells one by one.
  • Make a comparison of readings with those one given on hydrometer.
  • Usually, readings between 1.265 and 1.299 indicate towards a charged battery. Any reading under this bracket show signs of a weak battery.
  • Another method to examine battery health is to use a multimeter. This process is similar to the one we used for the battery load tester.

How to replace a battery?

A car battery can be easily replaced at home without any complication by following these simple steps:

Removing the old battery:

  • Start with removing negative terminal of battery usually marked as black or with (-) symbol to avoid any arcing with the wrench.
  • Disconnect the positive terminal usually marked as red or with (+) symbol.
  • Remove the “hold down clamp” of battery
  • Batteries are heavy in weight so lift it up carefully.
  • Clean the battery tray if it is corroded.

Connecting new battery:

  • Carefully lift in the new battery in its position.
  • Properly connect the “hold down clamp” first.
  • Connect the battery terminals in reverse order by connecting the positive terminal first.
  • Connect the negative terminal of the battery.
  • Make sure the connections are not loose.
  • Battery must be fixed properly to avoid any vibrations.
  • Terminals must be in a clean condition.
  • Add some petroleum jelly on both terminals as it reduces the process of corrosion.

The old battery can be sold to a battery shop from where you have purchased the new one. These car batteries are also recycled to prevent dangerous chemicals from getting into the atmosphere. Old lead plates can also be recycled into various other products.

Cleaning Latte Stains
